5 Centimeters Per Second is the latest film from Makoto Shinkai (Voices of a Distant Star) and tells of the lives, loves, and struggles of three different people, Takaki, Akari and Kanae.

Divided into three short films, 5cm per Second shows how friends can begin together, but begin to drift apart as time goes on. Takaki and Akari are best friends and Kanae is a fellow student who has feelings for Takaki, but all of them begin to separate as life splits them apart. As they think and remember each other, their relationships build and change as the story moves from each of their viewpoints and the people around them as well.
