Azula is Zuko's younger sister. When they were young, Azula was always playing tricks on Zuko, and favored her father, Ozai, becoming the Fire Lord instead of Iroh, Ozai's brother. Iroh's son died in battle, and when the Fire Lord of the time died, his "dying wish" was supposedly that Ozai become the fire lord instead of Iroh. At least, that was the story. In reality, Zuko's mom had Azulan killed so that Ozai wouldn't kill Zuko, as Azulan ordered Ozai to kill Zuko so Ozai could know the pain of loosing his only son, because Ozai was messed up enough to ask for the throne behind Iroh's back while Iroh was grieving for his dead son. Of course, that's why Zuko's mom left, she had to.
Azula has always been quite powerful as a fire bending prodigy, and her abilities only increase after her mother leaves. She doesn't make a big debut until the end of first season. She plays a major role in the second season, chasing after Zuko, Iroh, and the Avatar and company.
Some time in second season, she fights Katara, Zuko, Toph, and Aang, and severely injures Iroh, her uncle. In fact, Iroh even appears like he would die, but in the next episode it shows him bandaged up and awake. He is being tended to by Zuko, and later starts to teach Zuko about the nature of the lightning moves of firebending and teaches him to redirect lightning attacks.
Azula has two good friends, Mai and Ty Lee. Ty Lee is a sextuplet, one of six sisters that look alike, though she is the only one that's an acrobat. She knows how to shut down an opponent's entire nervous system, which in turn blocks the energy centers – also called 'Chakras' located along the spine - (which is why she can stop benders from bending, she knows the body inside out). Mai is the daughter of a member of Fire Lord Ozai's court. Her dad is given the job of ruling Omashu, an Earth Kingdom city, and Mai gets bored easily with nothing to do. She knows how to throw arrows, and she's been in love with Zuko ever since they were kids (and he feels the same way)
Overall, Azula is brutal and ruthless, traits she inherited from her father.

I like Azula in an odd way, she's a bit crazy but there are multiple times throughout the series that show she's got good in her. She is following the role that she was born into and just trying to live up to all that's expected of her. She was made to feel unloved and rejected by her mother and so she strives to gain love and acceptance from her father to fill that void.
WARNING: SPOILER ALERT!! IF YOU HAVE NOT SEEN THE EPISODE "THE BOILING ROCK" IN BOOK 3: FIRE I SUGGEST YOU REFRAIN FROM READING ANY FURTHER!!!
Also I love Mai and Ty Lee, especially after Mai turns on Azula to protect Zuko, whom she loves, and Ty Lee turns on Azula to protect Mai. I think that was great twist and emphasizes the "good inside everyone" theme of this show. ... show more »

Yes, I agree that she had done many bad things in her life but all evil is capable of good (Well, almost all). Most people did hate zuko when he was chasing GAang in the first book but their opinion changed when he turned over a new leaf. Perhaps, given certain circumstances, Azula might change for the better as well. She is, like Zuko, the grandchild of Avatar Roku. ... show more »
