Avatar Kyoshi was the avatar from 400 years before Aang.

Aang, Katara, and Sokka stopped on Kyoshi Island to ride the Elephant Koi. They were ambushed by a group of female warriors.

The island was named after avatar Kyoshi. The island stayed out of the war for over 100 years... until it slipped out to Zuko that Aang was there.
