Lelouch Lamperouge seems to be a typical junior at Ashford Academy, excelling in class, skipping Physical Education, participating in the Student Council, and living on the campus with his crippled and blind sister, Nunnally. However, Lelouch is not all that he seems to be. In truth, he is the exiled former prince Lelouch vi Britannia, and his sister is an exiled princess. The two of them were sent to Japan, now renamed Area 11, as political hostages shortly after their mother, Marianne's, brutal assassination.

After being involved in a terrorist attack in Shinjuku Ghetto, Lelouch stumbles upon what he recognizes to be a gas capsule, presumably filled with deadly gases. When he briefly touches it with his fingertip, however, a green haired, gold eyed girl emerges from it. Soldiers soon descend upon him, one being his childhood friend, Suzaku Kururugi. When Suzaku's superior gives the order for Suzaku to shoot and kill Lelouch, he refuses, and, much to Lelouch's horror, is shot himself.

As he is fleeing with the girl, a call from fellow Student Council member Shirley Fenette reveals his location to the soldiers. The leader of the unit shoots at Lelouch, though the girl gets in the way, and is shot clearly between the eyes. Somehow, though, she is alive, and makes a contract with Lelouch; one that would change life as he knew it forever. This contract gives him Geass. His specific Geass allows him to forcibly alter the subconscious of an individual so that they follow whatever order they are given, within certain specifications. One of these is that it can only be used once on a specific person, then they cannot be "Geassed" by Lelouch again.

Lelouch realizes that with the mysterious yet binding power of Geass, and the help of the mystery girl, C.C., he can accomplish the goal he has had for seven years; to avenge the death of his mother, Marianne vi Britannia, and to create a better world for his sister, Nunnally, to live in.
