Ukita was a member of the task force in the first part of the series. Despite his height (or lack thereof), he was a very brave and enthusiastic police officer who was seen smoking in some scenes. Ukita was also the second youngest on the task force, being only a little more than a year older than Matsuda.

Sadly, he died in the start of the series. When a message from the second Kira was broadcasted on Sakura TV, Ukita went right to the station, despite that the rest of the team told him to stay. Since the second Kira had the shinigami's eyes, he got a heart attack and died when he got to the television station.
