As a single father, Richard's job is to raise Rachel...besides solving crimes. He's a bit strict and doesn't like Jimmy because he thinks of Jimmy as a rival. He had a fight with his wife, Eri Kisaki, years ago, so they decided to live apart from each other. He still loves her, though. Unfortunately, he's a bit of a flirt, which makes Eri not like him.

A former policeman, Richard usually acts before thinking. Conan usually puts Richard to sleep and then disguies his voice as Richard's to reveal the solution to the case. This helps make Richard into a famous detective without him ever really doing much detection of his own.
