Last I checked, this anime was available on DVD at Anime Nation and Amazon, and on VHS at Amazon.
The Dragon Ball Z story picks up several years after the original Dragon Ball series. Goku now has a son named Gohan, after his grandfather. All of a sudden, a mysterious guy named Raditz comes form outer space. He tells Goku that he is his brother and that they are Saiyajins, a race of warriors who take over planets. He hits Goku and takes Gohan. Goku has to go get his old enemy, Piccolo, to help him defeat Raditz. They both fight Raditz, and Goku sacrifices himself to kill him. Piccolo uses a makankosappo (Special Beam Cannon) to drill through both. In his dying breath, Raditz tells Piccolo that two more powerful Saiyajins, Vegeta and Nappa, are coming to earth in a year. Goku, in heaven (or whatever you wanna call it), has to run across a 1,000,000 mile road that will take him to Kaio-sama, the ultimate martial arts teacher. Piccolo kidnaps Gohan so that he can train him.
Kami gets together Krillin, Tenshinhan, Yamcha, and Chauzu to train. Yaijorobee just sits and eats. Over the year that passes, Goku learns Kaioken and the Genki Dama, the Z senshi's skills improve, and Piccolo's heart is sofened by love (paternal) for Gohan. After a year, the Saiyajins arrive. Yamcha, Tenshinhan, Piccolo, and Chauzu die in the initial fight with Nappa. (Yamcha is killed by a Sabai man who self destructs, Piccolo is killed by Nappa as he saved Gohan, Chauzu self destructs to kill Nappa, and Tenshinhan drains all his energy to try to kill Nappa) Goku finally arrives (Kame Sennin wished him back with the Dragon Balls), sees how almost all of his friends were killed, and kicks Nappa's arse. Vegeta then kills Nappa for being stupid and weak.
Vegeta fought Goku for a long time with Goku demonstrating the Kaio techs, before he finally gets up to Kaioken 3. In this state, he is a match for Vegeta. However, Vegeta turns into an Oozaru (were-monkey) by making a small moon. He beats the crap out of Goku and is almost unstoppable. Luckily, Yaijorobee happens to finally be around to cut off his tail with his sword. Vegeta still fights though,and beats up Gohan. However, Gohan has also seen the light of the mini moon, and turns into an Oozaru himself. The weakened Vegeta notices this, and quickly shoots off Gohan's tail. But as Gohan reverts, he falls on Vegeta, almost killing him. Krillin wants to finish him off, but Goku stops him because he always likes a challenge, and Vegeta was leaving the planet anyway. Now they must go back to Piccolo's home Piccolo(Namek) to restore Piccolo so that the Earth Dragon Balls will be brought back on line, so they can bring back their friends (phew!)...
Besides the TV seasons, there are also thirteen main movies, and two TV Specials:
Now, Goku, Gohan, and Krillin (oh yeah, Bulma too) take off to Namek to use the dragonballs on that planet to revive Piccolo so that the earth Dragonballs will come back (phew!). Bulma (nerd) finds the remains of Nappa's ship but it blows up or something. Fourtunately, they find Kami's ship that he originally used to come to earth. Goku is still hurt from the fight with Vegeta, so he is resting.
Bulma, Gohan, and Krillin go to Namek, but Frieza (evil guy) decides that he wants the Dragonballs to become immortal. Meanwhile, Vegeta is destroying villages trying to get dragonballs so that HE may become immortal. This leads to alot of fighting between Frieza's minions, the Z warriors (Krillin and Gohan), and Vegeta. Vegeta is starting to turn into a good guy, even though he doesn't really notice it. He also heard of the legend of a "Super Saiyajin", and thinks that it will turn out to be him. They end up getting the balls (which give them 3 wishes).
They bring Piccolo back, he fuses with Nail annd becomes more powerful. Frieza and Vegeta are mad about not being able to get a wish until they find out that there are more wishes. Anyway, Frieza is finally ready to fight, he beats up people, Goku comes in the nick of time, gets mad when Frieza kills Krillin, and goes Super Saiyajin (hair turns gold). Frieza now lets loose energy into the planet's core so that the planet will explode in a matter of time.
Meanwhile, Kaio-sama, Kami, and Dende are using the combination of Super Shenron and Shenron to revive all the people on Namek, and then teleport them to Earth. Meanwhile (there was alot of that going on), Goku kicks Frieza's arse. Goku manages to escape the planet before it blows up. But...
The battle isn't over yet. Frieza's father, King Cold, finds Frieza's body parts and puts him back together with robotic parts. They go to earth to kill everybody and the Z-Warriors can't do a thing to stop them. However a mysterious guy named Trunks comes in wearing a capsule corp jacket. He nicely disposes of the two (by the way, he also can go super saiyajin), cutting Frieza in half. He warns Goku and friends of androids created by Dr. Gero that will come in the near future, and gives Goku some heart medicine. This leads to the android saga...
In this saga, Trunks warns Goku about the two androids (I get confused here) that killed every body and messed up his future. He gives Goku the heart medicine. Goku and the others go to train for the coming androids. During this time, Vegeta has sex with Bulma. The androids (19 and 20) come to fight the heroes. They have come to get revenge on Goku for destroying the Red Ribbon during the Dragon Ball series. The fight starts, and Goku is out of it because he didn't take his heart medicine. Everybody basically gets beat up because the androids can suck energy, and never get tired. We learn that Vegeta can go Super-Saiyajin now, and he takes on the droids. He kills number 19. 20 escapes to fight another day. (I'll fill in this part when I review the eps)
Now there are two more androids (17 and 18) on the loose. 20 (Dr.Gero) keeps ordering them around, but they don't like it. He tells them about Android 16 which is a failure. 17 kills Dr. Gero and activates Android 16. Piccolo figures that he needs to power up to and goes with Kami. Goku, Trunks, Gohan, and Vegeta go to the room of space and time so they can go beyond Super Saiyajin. Another time machine is located (earlier), this one has a hatched egg in it...
