Kami came to Earth as a boy (term used loosely, as technically Namek's are Asexual) in a spaceship (which was later used to go to Namek by Bulma, Gohan, and Krillin). Growing up on the outskirts of the Earth away from any civilization, Kami knew nothing about his planet or his people. He was the creator of the seven Earth Dragon Balls, and later he became guardian of the Earth.

Kami allows Piccolo to absorb him and become "The Namek" when the Z Fighters were fighting Cell. That caused the Dragon Balls to disappear until Dende became the new Guardian of Earth.
