Elemental Gelade takes place where three types of human beings coexist, Edil Raids, Eden Reids, and Sitting Raids (yes, Eden is the only one spelled "Reid"). The Raids have magical abilities and can react with other humans and become living weapons with powerful abilities. Sitting Raids are artificially created beings made by the Edil Raid.

The story begins with a rookie Sky Pirate named Cou, who discovers an Edil Raid named Ren during a routine raid. However, he soon discovers that Ren is quite powerful and that everyone is after her for their own ends. Cou then decides to protect Ren. He soon undertakes a quest to journey to a place called Edil Garden. In doing so, the solution could possibly bring lasting peace between the three races of humans.

After raiding an air ship, the young sky pirate Coud Van Giruet comes across an unusual cargo in his mates' cargo hold: a coffin-box containing a girl named Reverie Metherlence, or Ren. He falls in love with her at first sight... but Ren doesn't seem to have any feelings for him in return.

After encountering others that intend to steal her for their own devious desires, he learns of the truth that she is an "Eden Raid", a race of living beings identical to humans capable of turning into a weapon with a "Pleasure" (or Pledger), giving them amazing abilities powers imaginable. She meets up with three members of Arc Aile, an Eden Raid Protection Agency.

Coud and Ren together embark on a journey of love and adventure going to the Garden of Eden, and eventually meet their destiny... as well as being with each other for eternity.

Coud Van Giruet is a young orphan who was found by the boss of the Red Lynx, a group of Sky Pirates. Coud is still a rookie, but he has a strong will, a big mouth, and believe that he can do anything. When he meets Ren (Reverie Metherlence), he promises to take her to the Garden of Eden, the place that she must go to. On the way, he learns a lot, and becomes a kind and cool hero instead of a big-mouthed rookie. He controls a gusari (a grappling hook used for battle) to protect Ren, and if he can't do it alone, Ren can change into a big wind sword to aid him.

He first meets Ren in his ship (?) where she was found in a "coffin". Coud, being curious, opens the "coffin" and thought that Ren was a mannequin... and feels her. He is shocked when she suddenly spoke to him to close the "coffin". He apologized to her, in case he insulted her in any way.

Ren wants to find her Garden and decides to leave by the ship's door, only to find herself in mid-air and falling if not for Coud. Coud then suggested to Ren about speaking to his captain to bring her to her Garden. Ren is Edil Raid, and she is a descendant of one of the seven strongest families. She turns into a large sword, and her power is strong enough to cut iron easily. However, whenever she uses the power, she falls asleep. Ren has a tendency to fall anywhere.

Then three people (Kuea, Rowen, Cisqua) appeared by crashing into the ship with 50,000 cash for Coud in exchange for Ren, which he refuses. They then have a small battle and in the end ended up traveling together.
