Van doesn't trust people he doesn't know, and is known to make rash and unwise decisions. He is very protective of the people he cares about. Van is mostly a loner, and he doesn't have very many people he can trust. His brother betrayed him and his family when Van was little, and this made Van the way he is.

At the beginning of the series Van is crowned king. Throughout the series he learns to accept his race, be proud of who he is and fight for his people.

Van pilots Escaflowne, a legendary Guymelef (mech) made by an enigmatic race called the Ispano. Van puts a lot of priority on Escaflowne, his Guymelef. He even becomes one with it somewhere in the middle of the season. In Escaflowne he is determined to stop Zaibach from controlling the planet of Gaea and it's people.

As the series progresses Van finds he cares more and more about Hitomi, not just about her powers. He falls in love with Hitomi and is heartbroken when he sees her and Allen kissing on a bridge.
