The planet R has been kept in balance through four magical crystals, each one representing one of the physical elements: Wind, Water, Fire, and Earth. 150 years ago, the balance was upset, and the Crystals shattered, releasing a dread force of nothingness. The shattered crystals chose four heroes, and these four would face and eventually defeat the cause of the evil, returning the world to tranquility.

Now, the Crystals are in danger once again, and descendants of those great heroes of the past must rise to the call and ensure the safety of planet R once again.

Final Fantasy: Legend of the Crystals is based on the fifth installment of Square's highly popular Final Fantasy series of console role-playing games. This OAV, like the game upon which this is based, carries a varied and eclectic cast as well as plenty of chocobos (the trademark riding bird of the Final Fantasy series). Though Final Fantasy V has yet to be properly introduced in the United States, the series in itself has always had popularity in Japan and has gained notariety in the United States as well, particularly after the surprising success of its more recent installments.
