Souji Okita is male. The reason he acts so happy-go-lucky when he's not in "demon" mode is because he was inducted into the Shinsengumi at a very young age. Thus he's most likely making up for his lost childhood with his current mannerisms.

I HAD to get this manga! It's so powerful and NOTHING like the dvd..IMHO, of course. Early waiting for #5!!!
Yes, I got the same impression and a little more. Souji took up the sword at a very young age (the dvd says 9)and the disipline required to be as good as Souji is took much time to learn. This means he didn't get to be a child as normaly one would be, so he's still a child. Wait, you were wondering about gender...
Souji is male, yet I feel the transformation he goes to when he draws the sword is highly dramatic because he appears so 'fem'. It's a huge contrast. On another forum, there was chatter about Souji being gay because of being around only males from an early age... which isn't why people are gay or not... but it was an interesting concept.
Another reason for getting the dvd was the dubbed voice for Souji is the same person that voiced Hakkai in Gensomaden Saiyuki which is a huge fav of mine... so I was very interested to see what Braden Hunt could do with this. He's done a wonderful job! I am pleased.

Indeed! Braden Hunt is a spectacular VA (as are the rest of the folks at ADV), and I'm looking forward to seeing him take on more lead roles. He's got this very unique, gentle tone that's readily identifiable. The first time I heard Souji open his mouth to speak, I'm like, "Holy crap! That's Hakkai!!!" LOL...

Whoa...I forgot I made this thread. That's freaky. Haha I could have just waited to get the third volume to figure it out. They do that check-up thing and I doubt, if he was a girl, that they would have him checked-up. Besides, how many women are there in the Shinsengumi?
I'm sad about the end of #3...

Soji's gonna die. I think I'm gonna cry when I read about it. It really sucks that he has tuberculosis...
