Who's Okita?

Post by gracefulneptune »

Well, there it is, who is Okita? He's Saitoh's apprentice in the Revolution...but whatever happens to him afterwards. I've never seen him again.

Nah, he's not Saito's apprentice, Okita Soji was a captain of the Shinsengumi and is actually a real historical person.

Spoiler
Show
He died of tuberculosis when he was 25 :(

i've read in many places that he died at age of 26. oh-well.....i guess its debated. just like his name.

it is wrong for him to call saito 'captain' in real life too.....

Well, Saitou was born on January first :D ! And he died because of lung failure I think. I know it had something that can also be caused by smoking, lol.

Okita stuff: (May be something spoiler-ish :?

Okita was the captain of the 3rd (I think :? might have been 2nd) Squad of the Shinsen gumi. He died from TB (I'm guessing because he was shown coughing blood and stuff).

Hmmmmmm- perhaps I'm thinking of the wrong character. There seems to be a debate over Okita so let me clarify. I'm talking about the character that as far as i know is only shown in the OVA's in a few scenes. He(as far as I know) is Saitoh's apprentice and is shown fighting with Saitoh and watching Saitoh and Kenshin fight after Tomoe's death. He looks around 10-12, young kid in training. Does this help?

Ha!! I was right!
Saito didn't die of lung failure (at least not in real life, but Okita did) He died of a stomac ulcer (possebly because of drinking) when he was 72

And no, Okita was the captain of the 1st unit (both in real life and in RK)
Saito was captian of the 3rd and a guy named Shinpachi Nagakura was captain of the 2nd unit

you got the names mixed up. And went against the source! thanks for wasteing my time. And probably confusing all that have no idea. thank you.

lol that was a bit harsh wasn't it?. sorry. But check next time.

Many Spoilers here:

Saito Hajime Guide, Meaning , Facts, Information and Description
Saitō Hajime (斎藤 一 Saitō Hajime) (1843-1915) was the captain of the third troop of the Shinsengumi.

He was one of the few who survived the numerous wars of the late shogunate period. He was considered not to be as strong as Okita Soji but he had guts in combat and his left-handed thrust was called the most destructive technique of the Shinsengumi members, this one-hit technique matched well the philosophy of "Aku Soku Zan" ("evil swiftly eliminated" in a loose translation).

His life story and origins are very obscure and somewhat contradictory, some say that he was a son of a ronin while others say he left Edo after killing a person (some say accidentally) to join an army in Kyoto.

As a member of the Shinsengumi, it is said that Saitou was an introvert and and mysterious person; a common description of his personality says "was not a man predisposed to small talk". He conducted internal spying on possible enemy operatives (i.e. the Itou case), as well as monitoring other intelligence and enemy activity. His controvertial "hero" reputation comes from the fact that he has killed several corrupt members of the Shinsengumi and policts even after the war.

He married Tokio Takagi, a daughter of a daimyo.

After the war, he changed his name to Fujita Goro and worked as a police officer. He obtained special permission to carry a katana.

He used drink considerably, in fact, he passed away because of a stomach ulcer, possibly because of drinking, at the age of 72. He did not reveal about his activity in the Shinsengumi like Nagakura Shinpachi until his death.

Saitō in Fiction

Saitou has become a very popular recently as several anime and manga series have added him as a character. The popular Rurouni Kenshin anime series have Saitou as an anti-hero type of character often in conflict with Himura Kenshin (the main character) who he must work with in order to achieve his goals. It's also interesting to note that in this series, Saitou is very tall compared to the other characters and is always very cold and quiet, following some of the very few description of his personality in real life. The "Gatotsu" sword technique that he uses in the series follows the description of his original sword technique, but is purely fictional.

Okita Soji Guide, Meaning , Facts, Information and Description
Okita Soji (沖田 総司 Okita Sōji, also Okita Sōshi) was captain of the first troop of the Shinsen-gumi, an armed special security team in Kyoto during the late shogunate period.

Born Harumasa Sōjirō in 1844 from a samurai family, he trained at the age of nine with Kondo Isami, a master of the Tennen Rishin Ryu. He proved to be a genius swordsman, and was a teacher of kenjutsu at 18. His signature technique being his Three Piece Thrust, a technique that stabs the sword at the neck, left shoulder, and right shoulder. Okita is usually considered one of the most talented and strongest out of the Shinsen-gumi, along with Saito Hajime and Nagakura Shinpachi. He was the 2nd youngest member in the group with Todo Heisuke being the youngest.

It was rumored that his tuberculosis was discovered when he fainted during the Ikedaya Affair, but some sources say that he contracted the disease long after that. He died of tuberculosis at the age of 25, after the Boshin War.
