Mech Remakes

Post by Sanger Zomvolt »

Am I the only one who noticed a trend in remaking classical Mecha anime? Gaiking: Legend of Daiku Maryu just ended in Japan (And was completely finished being fansubbed by TV-Nihon), and now we have a whole slew of remakes of classical 70s and 80s mecha anime.

I'm especially stoked about JEEG. Raideen... Not so much. I especially hate its design. Its like the love child between the Hyaku Shiki and the RahXephon. On that note, it resembles a RahX remake more than a Raideen remake. In Dancougar's case, the use of scrawny waiflike children contradicts Dancougar's tone (Which is one of Badassness, Fury, Aggression, and...more Badassness...)

On another note, here's an amusing mashup of Gundam SEED Destiny's OP with Animetal's rendition of the original JEEG theme

Note that most mecha remakes are usually of relatively well known and formerly popular anime, that have not been seen in quite some time. The original Dancougar, while quite popular and spanning a tv series and several ovas, has not been seen animated since the late 80s. By doing this, the show can instill nostalgia in older viewers who may have watched the originals, while trying to gain new viewers at the same time. It definitely worked with me, as I watched the Gaiking remake, primarily because of my interest in the original.

Macross on the otherhand still has a set fanbase that has not faded away, meaning the nostalgia factor is not there. While popularity is usually good, Macross's longevity and relative popularity will make its chances of remakes highly unlikely. What is much more likely is the creation of side stories or sequels to the Macross Franchise, like Macross Plus and Macross Zero. Besides, there is no need to remake Macross, the original was good as is.

A true sequel to the TV series, with at least some of the original cast on the otherhand would be lovely.

A remake...of Giant Robo? -_-

I just bought the box set of the original series a few weeks ago. Now I have to spend money on it again =/

My favorite is Macross zero, which only has five episodes. And the cool thing about it: is that the jet fighters look like F-14 tomcats.

You forgot how Gundam Seed was a remake of the original.

And the newer AT Votoms series isn't exactly going to be a remake, there's been word that it's going to be titled "The Peruzen Files". To any one that doesn't know Peruzen as in Colonel Yoran Peruzen is the man responsible for the formation of the Red Shoulder Battalion (aka The Bloodsuckers). This was the unit that Cirico was a member during the 100 Years War and before the Lido incedent.

eh, I just use remakes as an umbrella for any resurrected franchise from the past.

anyways, more news

New Giant Robo's Official Website: http://www.gr-anime.com/

And Raideen and Dancougar Nova's 1st episodes were both released (But only Dancougar's was translated). Both were not very impressive, Dancougar being most disappointing in its concept and premise. It still has potential though.
