I just meant the original Metal Gear.

How the hell did you get the impression that the PS1 was more powerful? If you recall the N64 had better graphics and games than the PS1. Even the GBA has better graphics than the PS1. Lets see the PS1 was a 32 bit system. Do the math
In the beginning was the Win, and the Win was with Gai, and the Win was Gai.

And Sony wasn't even around in the videogaming world when FF was on the Nintendo systems such as NES and SNES. When the PS1 came around, Square made a correct decision in continuing their franchise on a far more succesful and far more powerful console.
Metal Gear Solid may not have been on any Nintendo systems. But like Kazuma said, the very first Metal Gear games were originally on Nintendo systems when they were brought to console gaming. Link

The original Playstation was a 32 bit system, but its use of a CD for games instead of cartridges put it up to scale with the N64.

The GBA is a 16 bit system. The DS may have better graphics than the PS1, but the GBA certainly did not.

Gameboy color was closer to 8 bit. If the GBA was a 32 bit system, it would have had a buttload of 3-d games. The GBA has about the equivalent power of a SNES, which was 16 bit. Where are you getting this?

If it was capable of 32 bit graphics, it used them sparringly. The power of the GBA was pushed to the limit when using simple 3-D graphics for architecture. No GBA game ever looked nearly as "good" as any Resident Evil game on the PS1 or many other PS1 games for that matter.

Why else would Square transfer their renowned Final Fantasy series to Sony if it wasn't more powerful? As GT said, Sony used disc-based media, enhancing its stats. The N64 still relied on cartridges for games. Also, the N64 still embraced basic Nintendo franchises, where as Sony and its PS1 had dozens of new and original games coming for it.

Sony appeared to be the dark horse of the N64/PS era, but by the end of it all, it came out on top. Actually, the Playstation had a 24 bit engine, not 16. If you take a look at Playstation's greatest hits, they are all original titles.
