Eichi Sakurai was Mitsuki's childhood friend. They were both at an orphanage in Japan together. Mitsuki was very shy until she met him there. Eichi went up to her and greeted her while she sat alone.
One say, a couple came to adopt a child. They chose Eichi. On the day that Eichi left, they took a plane ride to America where they were going to live. He left and told Mitsuki that he loved her. But Mitsuki could not say anything.
In the series, Eichi is only seen in Mitsuki's mind as a memory. In the manga, we find out that he died in a plane crash and Mitsuki knows it because she saw it on the news. In the anime, Mitsuki goes to America and learns that Eichi died in a car crash. So, no matter what, Mitsuki won't be able to tell Eichi that she loves him, too.

Eichi-kun is a young version of Izumi. Izumi is a younger version of Wakaouji o_O
I felt really sorry when (Spoiler coming up) at the very end Eichi is an angel and he flies accross the sky and spots Mitsuki. Then he sees that she is with Ta-kun. He gets a shock, but then he smiles because Mitsuki is full of happiness. Then the last line comes up: "I feel like the sky just smiled at me". Ever since then, I've been feeling so sorry for Eichi.
