Maes Hughes is more of a family man than anything else- he loves his wife more than a man should at his age, he carries tons of pictures of his beloved daughter, and he's never unprepared for an opportunity to show home movies. He's like a living Kodak commercial.
Maes is serious about his job, but he has a more positive outlook on life then his fellow comrades. He needs to be cheerful for Roy Mustang's sake anyway- if not for his cheerful outlook, Roy would be in deep remorse... or worse.
Maes doesn't care about promotions or power, he just wants to be able to support his family and friends, and more than anything have fun.
Maes Hughes gets killed by Envy. He has had other ranks besides "Major".
Some time after the events concerning Lab 5, Hughes finds out some information about Miss Douglas, a secretary. Somehow she had been involved with the military in the past. While he was walking down the hallway to the room where he was supposed to talk to Dr. Marcoh, Maes explained to her what he had found out. "Who are you?", he asked. She didn't answer. "Is Marcoh really behind that door?" No answer. "I guess I'll find out." He grabbed the doorknob and then Lust emerged from another door and attacked him.
Hughes managed to escape the building, with "Lt. Ross" behind him. Then he noticed that this person wasn't Lt. Ross, because she had a mole under her left eye. It was Envy. Then Envy tried to attack him, but Hughes cut her throat and walked away. Envy then transformed into Maes Hughes' wife and shot him.
Maes Hughes starts the series as a Major, and is promoted to Lieutenant when Roy Mustang becomes a full Colonel. After Lt. Hughes is killed in action by Envy, he is promoted to Brigadier General at his funeral.

OH MY GOODNESS, WHEN MAES DIED I JUST STARRED AT THE T.V. I went into a crying meltdown, i cried the rest of the night. I have never gotten so upset over an anime character like I got upset over Maes Hughes. i loved this character, i found him sweet, charming and absolutely hillarious! not to mention maes was very sexy especially when he took off his glasses. idk what ima do without hughes, ughhhhhh. ... show more »

What an amazing man... he discovered EVERYTHING years before the rest of us, or anyone else! He was hilarious, and such a loving husband and father... I remember when he got shot, I kinda just stared at the screen, expecting someone to come along and save the day... and no one did. I know it's really weird to be so upset that a fictional character died... but I mean really?? It had to be Hughes?! And THEN having to watch him die again in FMAB?? Still just as heart wrenching. If anyone deserved to live in FMA, it was him. R.I.P. Hughes! We're all watching over your family <3 ... show more »

I cried hard when Maes died!! T.T I cried out geysers when Elecia started asking 'Why they were burying Daddy and why he won't wake up'...then when Roy started to cry, I was gushing out waterfalls...it was so sad!!! :( I was SO mad at this episode for two other reasons:
1) After Hughes got shot, I was 80% expecting other officers including Roy to be right there to take him to the hospital...but no, that obviously didn't happen.
and 2) When Envy transformed into Maes' wife, Maes just STOOD THERE staring at Envy. >:3 Ugh..

T.T, i totally cried when Maes died, he's like the coolest character evar! well..next to Roy and Ed, and for some reason i got really pissed off when Roy acted like Sasuke and started with the whole revenge thing...=__=ll. PS i think FMA is better than Naruto

Its all Envy's fault that Maes Hughes is dead. It happened like this: Maes Hughes was outside of central in a phone booth and Maria Ross was with him (not really Maria Ross .. its Envy in disguise) hes Hughes is trying to call someone on the phone but it didn't work. After that Hughes walked up to the fake Maria Ross and said "who are you ... you're not Maria Ross. Maria Ross has a mole under right eye" only then did Envy transform into Hughes wife Gracia and shoots him.
It was very sad. At the funeral Hughes daughter Elysia cried "why are those weird men burring daddy he has work to do. Mommy why .. daddy has work to do" then she started crying. How sad. That nearly made me cry. Envy that b**ch. I hope he dies for what he has done to Maes Hughes his family and all of his friends. ... show more »
