Scar is a man with a tortured past and a hatred for all state alchemists. He was thought to be the sole survivor of the Ishbalans, a group of people massacred by the state in the eastern rebellion, until he later encountered a entire village of them. The Ishbalans denounce alchemy, as they believe that alchemy defies the will of God. The military, on the other hand, embraces alchemy, which was sure to cause tensions between the two groups, but that is not what caused the eventual conflict.

The military's plan was to send in soldiers in order to intentionally start a secret uprising so that the Ishbalans would fight back, causing it to seem like the Ishbalans started the violence. And their plan worked, for the most part. Of course, as if that wasn't underhanded enough, the military then changed those secret soldiers who were sent in to provoke the uprising into chimeras. Talk about going just a tad too far!

After the Crimson Alchemist blew off Scar's real arm (and gave him the scar on his face), Scar's brother transferred his own arm that had all the markings on it that he had gotten from trying to bring his girlfriend back which caused Lust to be created. Then, Scar's brother died. Because of this tattooed arm, Scar doesn't need to make a transmutation circle like most other alchemists everytime he wants to transmutate. Scar's real name is unknown, so he is referred to by the X- shaped scar on his face.

In episode Episode 42: His Name is Unknown, Scar has this to say about his real name: "Long ago this body did have a holy name given by god, but that person died years ago from a life of sin, malice and retribution."
