Athrun Zala's mother died in the "Bloody Valentine Tragedy" in the cosmic era 70 three days after war was declared by Zaft. Athrun's father is Patrick Zala, one of the leading war hawks on the council. Athrun is also engaged to Lacus Clyne (politically).

Athrun was Kira Yamato's best friend when they were younger. But now that they are on different sides of the war, it's difficult for their friendship to be rekindled (unless Athrun can find a way to convince Kira that he is fighting on the wrong side).

Athrun pilots the stolen Aegis Gundam, which was stolen from the Earth Alliance. It has a mobile armor form and it has a 60mm high energy beam rifle, 4 beam sabers, 580 multi phase energy cannon in mobile armor form, and 75mm automatic multi barrel CIWS. The Aegis gundam gets destroyed and he gets hold of the Justice gundam.

Cagalli has feelings for Athrun, and they kiss later on.

Athrun pilots the ZGMF-X23S Saviour Gundam Pilot, and will become the Infinite Justice Gundam pilot.

Athrun Zala, an old friend of Kira Yamato, is currently a Gundam pilot for the Zaft forces. In the beginning of the series, Athrun and some of his aquaintances are sent to Heliopolis, a resource satelite in neutral territory, to capture the newest Gundam Mobile Suits. This is his first re-encounter with his old friend Kira Yamato.

Forced to be in a battle against the Naturals, Athrun must fight against his old freind Kira. Athrun's fiancee, Lacus Clyne, goes missing and he must look for her.
