Takumi appears to be a perpetually spaced out daydreamer. However, when he climbs behind the wheel of his father's Corolla, he still seems the spaced out daydreamer - but can drive it so fast that he can defeat veteran street racers in more powerful cars, and cause his passengers to pass out from sheer terror.

Takumi learned his driving skills making tofu deliveries down the treacherous slopes of Mt. Akina for his father, who insisted that Takumi carry a glass of water in the car and not spill a drop, to let him know his driving has not damaged the tofu. In a quest to get the tedious trip over with as quickly as possible, Takumi became such a proficient driver that he can throw the "Hachi-Roku" sideways without spilling any water.

When the local street racers discover his skills, naturally they want him to run - while Takumi, who has viewed driving as a chore like cleaning windows, shows very little interest in street racing.
