Ayame is a wolf demon that grew up in the mountains. When she was very young, Kouga rescued her and promised to marry her when she grew up. Well, she came back one day, holding him to his promise. She then realizes that Kouga has to avenge his tribe (earlier on, Kagura killed them.)
Ayame is strong in her own right. She throws out grass and leaves that can slice through demons, and she helps save Hakkaku and Ginta, two of Kouga's wolves, from demons. Later on, her tribe is attacked by zombies, and she and Kouga have to fight them off. This starts the Shinchinitai saga.
On a side note, Ayame is a character that was made specifically for the anime, and was not in the manga.
Ayame's name means "iris" (as in the flower) in Japanese.

To: Naomi - Yes Koga and Ayame are very cute together but so r Inuyasha and Kagome and oh lets not forget Miroku and Sango <3 After all same as Koga and Ayame getting married in the "The Final Act" Miroku and Sango have children together! 2 twin girls and 1 boy. @Nikki - Ayame isn't human she is a wolf demon, so is her grandfather. Demons can look like humans OR animals so it is possible for a "animal type" demon to have a child (or grandchild) that is a "human type".
