Buyo is Kagome's really fat cat. Of the times I've seen him, he was either sleeping or being played with by InuYasha. Almost every time InuYasha comes to Kagome's time, he'll be seen playing around with Buyo (not that Buyo likes it).
Buyo is pretty much the key turning point of the whole series. If it weren't for Buyo, Kagome would probaby be dating Hojo and never met InuYasha or the rest of them. InuYasha would still be sealed to the tree, and Miroku would be trying to get Naraku by himself.
If Buyo hadn't run into the shrine and Kagome didn't go after him, there'd be no story. Buyo made the series.

They actually fi refer to buyo quite a few times as "he" in both, then english and japanese versions of the anime.

You are correct on the fact that Most Calicos are female. (Calico pelts require an XX chromazone, Males Have XY, Females have XX. Buyo is female. Not only because she is a calico cats and calico cats are female. But also because If i remember right souta or kagome, mentions it in the manga

I love Buyo he is soo funny and cute. I love it when he goes Meeeeerow with a deep voice. He did that in one of the episodes of Inuyasha The Final Act.
