Izayoi is Sesshoumaru's stepmother and InuYasha's original mother. It is unclear as to whether or not she is/was married to InuYasha's father, InuTaisho, who is a demon that looks a lot like Sesshoumaru. Unlike Sesshoumaru, and InuTaisho, Izayoi is a full human, making InuYasha when first born, a half-demon half-human. She died before the InuYasha series began. But she appeared again when Sesshoumaru made an exact replica of her when he experienced InuYasha. Sesshoumaru had used a demon named Muonna to create an illusion of InuYasha's mother. He did that to get InuYasha to tell him the location of their father's tomb.
This evil plan was Jaken's idea, and the fact that Sesshoumaru agreed to it showed that he probably didn't think much of his stepmother to begin with. In fact, Sesshoumaru's relationship with his stepmother probably wasn't much of his pleasure. Sesshoumaru despised her for her human heritage or her marriage with his own father, though he may have just not bothered with her at all back when she was still alive. We don't know if Sesshoumaru and his stepmother ever had any conversation but he might as well have met her when she was alive.
When Izayoi first had InuYasha, InuYasha's father was then killed by a man named Setsuna No Takemaru, who was originally in love with Izayoi, but was deceived by Souunga into hating her. Later he imagined her and realized she was protecting him, instead of hurting him. So let's say Izayoi was a very good woman, who cared for people and put their feelings above her own.
Izayoi is the lovely human woman who gave birth to our beloved hanyou, InuYasha. She died long before the series even started and was only briefly mentioned in a few of the episodes, simply as "Mother". Her true name was not even revealed until the third InuYasha movie.
Anyway, we were introduced to her "replica" by Sesshoumaru when he first confronted InuYasha. At that time, Sesshoumaru had told a demon, created from the souls of grieving mothers, called "the Nothing Woman" (AKA "un-mother") to act as Izayoi and trick InuYasha into revealing the location of InuTaisho's hidden tomb.
It's probably safe to say that, in the time she was alive, Izayoi was a good and loving mother who cared for her son more than anything else in the world.

I think Izayoi died way before Inuyasha's body became a "teenager", not that there's any facts to prove this, just a fan making up stuff, but Inuyasha said "She died a long time ago..." And with the scene of him looking like a child while being chased by random lesser demons, I think she was dead during that time. One being demons obviously grow slow, so when Inuyasha looked about eight or nine, he was probable 50-100, and she had probably passed when he gotten that old! I only say that because she's a princess, and it looked like Inuyasha was never out of palace grounds when he was a kid, so when she died, he was probably kicked out.
Also, just two more scents for the game machine, I like to fantasies that Sesshoumaru looked over him when he was a kid; come on, think about it, Sesshoumaru, according to Inuyahsa, always comes around to "mess" with him, and in the manga Sesshoumaru seemed very playful, as if he really didn't have anything against Inuyasha. Now, I'm not saying he wasn't disgusted by him, or that he didn't hate him, but I think he always had some time of "big brother" love for Inuyasha, and with them being demons, it just seemed more harsh and deadly to us. You don't know that though. Personally I like both Izayoi and Sesshomaru's mom. Inu No Taisho actually did love Izayoi and she loved him back. Sure Sesshomaru's mom and Inu No Taisho had a history together, so what. That doesn't mean that you all have to bash on Izayoi just because she "supposedly broke them up". It's like how couples are. It's called separation or divorce. Don't blame Izayoi for not protecting Inuyasha when he was little. At least she was there for her son when he needed the love of a parent, especially since his father wasn't alive anymore. She did the best she could to have Inuyasha safe and sound. It's Inu No Taisho's choice to pick between Sesshomaru's mom and Izayoi, not yours. It's also the creator's choice to pick the pairings too. Anyways, how the hell do you all know if Izayoi's nice or not? You've never seen her a lot to say that she's mean. She didn't seem mean to me. Hating her is just like hating Kagome and liking Kikyo. She's also not fake. So stop assuming things that you don't know and don't have proof of. If you all know the definition of a slut, you would know that it means someone who wear provocative clothes and act like whores, something that Izayoi is not. Wow...people here really do hate inus mom. From her appearance in the manga and in the movie she seems nice and I don't think that she would steal taisho away on purpose. And I think between taisho and sess' mom wasn't that much love to begin with. I mean, when you see her in the manga, she seems like a very cold person. I think it was just an arranged marriage, if you consider of which times we are talking,this is most likely. Don't get me wrong I love sess' mom! She rocks! But it just ennerves me when so many people seem to hate the character for no particular reason. ... show more »

Wow, a lot of people seem to hate Izayoi and Toga without knowing the facts. I know that Kouga said that 'wolves' mate for life, but that says nothing about dogs. And yes Inu no Taisho is a dog- not a wolf. Correct me if I'm wrong- which I know that I'm not wrong, but dogs do not mate for life right...?
