The only way for the Mask of Flesh to survive is to take over a human until the body starts to die. When InuYasha finds the mask, he uses the Tetsusaiga to destroy it.
The Mask of Flesh is a Noa Mask, a Noa Mask that came to life because of the shikon jewel shard. Because it was carved from wood that had a jewel shard in it, the mask cannot be more than 500 years old (since Kagome had shattered the Shikon Jewel 500 years ago).
