Summoned unexpectedly to the planet Cephiro at the same time as Umi and Fuu, Hikaru is pretty much what you expect in an anime redhead: fire in her eyes, energetic and assertive almost to the point of aggressiveness. She's a girl of action.
She's also a girl of emotional extremes. She's normally upbeat and happy all the time. Having a dog back home, she takes to the cute Mokona instantly. She is however vulnerable to bouts of deep depression, especially when something really shakes her to the core. She also looks a little young for her age and is a bit naive.
Hikaru is the most willing of the three (at first) to become a Magic Knight, and Hikaru's magic sword is the most traditional, resembling a broadsword. Her magic is fire-based and perhaps the most powerful of the three. Her family runs a kendo dojo (kendo is a swordfighting martial art), so she's the quickest to get into the swing of things. Interestingly, though, she's the last to revive her Guardian (Rayearth).
The name "Hikaru Shidou" translates to "Light of the Lion Shrine" and alludes to her astrological sign: Leo the Lion.

*sigh* Look at the traits of a mary sue. They fit her almost perfectly. She is the strongest and smallest of the three, she becomes the "goddess" of a world she's not even from, and the "God" character likes her over EVERYONE ELSE. And EVERYONE LOVES HER! >.> Mary sue!!

Okay. There is no such thing as an original character anymore. Every character has a purpose in the story. It's up to the writer to make a new storyline. So don't complain about Joes or Sues. Hikaru in this story was needed. She was the one who had the most spirit. She was awesome and Lantis and her make such a cute couple.

She's not a mary sue because she's not perfect. Also, if she was a mary sue, she would have figured about the truth about having to kill the princess and think of a way to avoid that, but she didn't and they killed the princess. Thus proving Hikaru is not a mary sue.

My fav character, I'm exactly like her
