Hayate Gekkou is a jounin who judges the preliminaries right before the 3rd round on the chunin exams. He has a constant cough and a somewhat sickly look about him (kind of like Hyatt from Excel Saga), said to be caused by a childhood illness. Though these things make him appear weak, he is actually a very skilled ninja, who can perform a technique with his sword called "Dance of the Cresent Moon".
After the preliminaries, Hayate overhears plans of the attack on Konoha. He flees to pass the message but is pursued and cut off by Baki, the sand village ninja. They fight and unfortunately, Hayate is killed shortly after. His body is discovered by ANBU the next morning who, obviously, have no idea who could have done such a thing. Hayate dies trying to save his village. Very sad.
