Character Description: Shinji Ikari
To this point, Shinji's life has been very strained. He lost his mother at a young age, and he hasn't seen his father in ten years. As a result, Shinji has become a loner. He is a relatively quiet, introverted, self-conscious boy who doesn't tend to converse much with others. Misato is trying very hard to remedy that.
He has difficulty understanding why he has to pilot Eva Unit 01, but when he sees the alternative (having a very injured Rei pilot it), he agrees to fight. Shinji's not really the fighting type, but there are things that can drive him to fight, such as his greatest fear (letting everyone down). Driven by this fear, his instincts can kick in, and he becomes like a berserker.
More than anything, Shinji seeks his father's approval, and this is his motivation to pilot the Eva. He bears an attraction towards Rei, though he doesn't fully understand why, and once Asuka arrives and moves in with him and Misato, a relationship forms between them as well.
