Souji is an all around nice person. He likes to joke around, playing jokes on the "Demon Vice Commander" Hijikata, but he holds great respect to him. Souji is never seen without his loyal companion, Saizou the pig.
It states in the anime that he has an older sister and that he took up his first sword before Tetsu did, around the age of nine. It's never revealed why he did so.
Souji loves sweets, his favorite being wagashi. He is often seen without a sword when off duty. When on duty, he takes things slightly more seriously by wearing the outfit and carrying in a sword and when in a fight, he doesn't leave a single opening. He is the 1st Unit captain.
Even though Souji was the strongest, he did have weakness--like any human being. He was sick. He died young because of tuberculosis.
