Gary Oak is the grandson Of Professor Oak (Ookido-Hakase) and Ash's rival. His first starter Pokemon is Squirtle.
Gary has his own fanclub which he carries along in his car. He has an elder sister named May Oak (who was mentioned in the series, but never made an appearance).
In the manga, Gary and Ash ended up traveling together, while the anime shows the continuation of their rivalry (he battles Ash in the Jhoto tournament).
In the videogames, Gary's sister is called Daisy (not to be confused with Daisy, Misty's sister), not May (who is not the May that joins the cast in the 2003-2004 season).
In Pokemon Diamond & Pearl, Gary shows up in the episode called Ill-Will Hunting. He is helping Professor Rowan move the shield on to a remote area at Mt. Coronet.
In the comics and in the games, the character based on Gary Oak goes by the name "Blue" (or "Green" in Japan).
