SpongeBob Squarepants is back in another DVD release! This time, it's SpongeBob's Pest of the West. The outer slip cover for the DVD case is pretty cool looking, where it makes the DVD art work featuring Spongebob, Patrick, and Mr. Crabs appear as if they are behind those old-style swinging saloon doors. Sliding the outer cover off reveals a scene from the old west done in Spongebob style, with Plankton front and center, complete with the classic long and curly villain mustache, and the citizens of Bikini Bottom in a sepia-toned old west town.
There are seven SpongeBob episodes included in this release, though only the first one on the disc, the double-length Pest of the West, has an old-west theme to it. In it, SpongeBob learns about an ancestor of his from where else but Bikini Bottom in the old west. And of course, the ancestors of all the main characters are there as well. Oddly enough, I found this to be the least funny episode on the disc.
My favorite episode here, which I've seen numerous times on television and still enjoyed watching it again on DVD, is The Inmates of Summer, where SpongeBob and Patrick accidentally and unknowingly miss the boat to their summer camp experience, and inadvertently end up on a boat traveling with a group of convicts to a camp for prisoners. But since SpongeBob and Patrick think it's summer camp, they have a great time, which makes the warden even more ticked off.
The other five episodes included on the disc are The Krusty Plate, Pat No Pay, To Save A Squirrel, 20,000 Patties Under the Sea, and The Battle of Bikini Bottom. All are pretty funny, as there are no duds here. I'd have to say 20,000 Patties Under the Sea would probably be my next favorite out of these, as Spongebob and Patrick get to go off and have a little adventure while trying to sell Krabby Patties on the road.
All-in-all, this is a good release. It's not a best-of-the-best collection, but it's funny enough to keep you entertained, both kids and adults, and it will be watched more than once. Check out the official website for more information about this release.
SpongeBob's Pest of the West, released by Nickelodeon, is available starting April 15, 2008.
