Last I checked, this anime was available on DVD at Anime Nation and Amazon.com, and on VHS at Amazon.com.

In 1991, Sonic the Hedgehog, Sega Enterprises' answer to Mario Bros., appeared on Sega Genesis video game consoles all over Japan. It became such a hit that it spawned several video game sequels and two American cartoon series. In 1996, Sonic entered the anime world with this movie.

The story takes place on the planet Freedom where there are 2 dimensions, the Land of the Sky where Sonic, Tails, and all the good guys live. The other dimension is the Land of Darkness where Robotnik lived. Now Sonic reluctantly agrees to help Robotnik outwit Metal Robotnik, who kicked Robotnik out of the city of Robotropolis, and deactivate the Robot Generator which will otherwise explode at sunrise.

With the help of Tails and Knuckles, Sonic does just that. But it turns out that Metal Robotnik and the Robot Generator were all a trap. After Sonic deactivated the Generator, it looked like he was getting electrocuted but it turns out that Robotnik was gathering all of Sonic's life data in order to complete Robotnik's Metal Sonic. Now, Metal Sonic has been assigned to destroy the North Pole, because by doing so the planet Freedom will be destroyed. And so, Sonic, Tails, and Knuckles must stop this.
