Anime Description: Urotsukidoji: Legend of the Overfiend

Okay, so apparently we humans are ignorant fools, as unbeknownst to us, there are two other complete worlds that exist right along side our own. Hm, kinda sounds like alternate dimensions to me, but the narrator dude on the DVD says "worlds", so I guess "worlds" it is. Anyway, so along with the human world, these worlds, called the Makai (the demon world) and the Jujinkai (the half-human, half-beast world), are about to become the target of an ancient prophesy, which states that every 3000 years a being called the Chojin (also known as the Overfiend) is brought to life through a human to unite these three worlds. I see... every 3000 years, huh? So shouldn't these three worlds already be united then? Or do we all just keep separating them after they're united. If so, you'd think they stop waiting an entire 3000 years before uniting them.

Urotsukidoji: Legend of the Overfiend At any rate, the Jujinkai world had sent a couple of warriors to Earth about 300 years ago to start looking for the human who is to become the Overfiend. Amano Jacku, and his super short skirt wearing sister, Megumi, have thus far had no luck finding this guy, and are getting discouraged. Now, each of them thinks that they have finally found their man. Amano feels for certain that it's Ozaki, star of the high school basketball team and Mister popular with all the ladies. Megumi, on the other hand, thinks it's a clumsy perverted peeping tom named Magumo. Who is right? Who do you think....

Urotsukidoji: Legend of the Overfiend Before either one of them can find the answer, a little situation happens involving Akemi and one of her teachers, Ms. Togami. Magumo spies them walking together, and follows them to an empty classroom, where Ms. Togami starts to take advantage of our sweet innocent Akemi. And all the while, Magumo watches with shock through a crack in the door. Eventually, though, he decides to rush in and save Akemi, but just before hie can, Amano shows up and stops him. And it's a good thing, too, since Ms. Togami happens to be a demon in disguise. Shedding her human body, Ms. Togami uses all over her available tentacles on Akemi, but upon seeing this, Amano steps in and confronts the beast. After the battle, Akemi awakes to find Magumo watching over her, and lucky for him, she thinks he saved her.

Urotsukidoji: Legend of the Overfiend There is some sexual content here, although it's much less graphic that your standard hentai series, like those from Vanilla Series for instance. Yeah, there is sex involving monsters with tentacles, but no penetration is actually shown, nor is any full frontal nudity that's not hidden in shadows. In fact, this DVD is only rated NC-17, a far cry from the X or XXX rating one might expect from anime tentacle porn. No where on the DVD or the DVD case does it state that this is an edited version of the film, but I have my suspicions.

Urotsukidoji: Legend of the Overfiend With those suspicions in mind, I decided to do a little research, and what I discovered was that Urotsukidoji was actually originally a 5 part OVA series. Ah! That explains why this film felt so disconnected with itself. I mean, after watching it I couldn't help but think that they had hired three separate teams and told them to each work on one section of the movie. So finding out that it was actually the first 3 of the 5 separate episodes edited down and spliced together made me feel much better, especially since I found this film to be confusing and boring. I really think keeping them as separate episodes with breaks would have been much more effective for holding my interest.

Urotsukidoji: Legend of the Overfiend Oh, and you know what else made this even worse? It has both and English language track and the original Japanese language track, but absolutely no subtitles! So in order to know what was going on, I had to watch the dubbed version. The acting for Amano, Megumi, and their servant Kuroko were pretty good, Magumo was alright, and everyone else just wasn't. It was quite difficult to listen to it in English and still try to pay attention to what was going on. C'mon guys, how much work does it take to do some subtitling? Seriously! Not difficult, people. Not difficult at all, especially for a classic piece of work such as this. The good news is that Urotsukidoji: Perfect Collection takes care of all these problems. The bad news: I don't have the Perfect Collection!
