Character Description: Keiichi Maebara

Keiichi Maebara is pretty much the main character in the first three arcs of the anime When They Cry - Higurashi. He is a transfer student to Hinamizawa, and his father is a famous painter that is rich. He is involved in countless murderous crimes throughout the series.

Keiichi always got good grades and did very well in school, but had caused some trouble in his old town. He is later forgiven for all the trouble he caused after truly regretting it.

@panda pondo he picked on toddlers, it's revealed in the last arc of the first series that he would shoot at them with a toy gun as they passed by, to the point where they would have to walk in groups everywhere for their safety.

@wtc2010 I was thinking about those things too, and the best way I think it can be described is as follows. If you notice in the first Kai arc where Satoko survives, they end up killing her in the hospital later because she was a witness to what happened to Rika. Now, in Onikakushi-hen I believe that the Great Hinamizawa Disaster does not happen. The rationale behind this being the fact that the Irie Clinic would be closed down, but with the murders of Rena and Mion by Keiichi along with the letter he left and his behavior give them enough cause to keep the clinic open; but with the Yamainu and Irie(who is only seen and not introduced, thus the characters familiar way of referring to him compounded Keiichi's paranoia with confusion causing him to act the way he did) involved in the first arc, we can infer that one, all or some of the characters familiar with Irie worked to involve him i.e. Rika, Satoko, Rena and Mion. The reason Keiichi survived in Tatarigoraishi-hen was due to the fact that his fall from the bridge meant he would have been able to avoid the disaster, and there was no reason to kill him since he did not witness anything damaging. Keiichi's persecution complex stems partly from his isolation where he previously lived and partly from his own personality. If one were to take Keichii's character and view it objectively one would find that Keiichi is just as important to Hinamizawa as Rika. If Kai is about Rika, then the first season could be argued to be about Keiichi. This is due to the fact that Rika constantly refers to Keiichi as the "key" and his character development over move multiple arcs is partly based off each other. In Onikakushi-hen, Keiichi becomes distrustful of his friends. In Watanagashi-hen, he is too trusting and his inability to discern between Shii and Mii ends up almost killing him. In Tatarigoraishi-hen, his friendship with Mion and Rena is focused on less, and the way he relates to Satoko and Rika is shown more. The time looping effect is shown to facilitate this process, as Keiichi does not make the same mistakes twice. His trust in Rika inspires her on multiple occasions to continue resisting her fate. If anyone has seen Sengoku Basara, Soichiro Hoshi also provides the voice for Sanada Yukimura. Now this is an entirely baseless idea but Keiichi is mostdefinitely Yukimura reincarnated. *nodnod* ... show more »

What was funny was the looks on his face when he's scared
but the part when he slammed Rena's fingers between the door he
didn't even get the time to see what she actually had! that's f**ked
up. I would've been ready for anything the moment she came into my house
damn! the case could've been handled out differantly

Now, this is common knowledge if you watch Keiichi's behaviour, in the anime, but more shown in the manga: he has signs of a persecution complex (which in the first arc possesses him and makes him paranoid). He in the first arc beleives that what is actually a hullucination to be real do to the complex. However, his complex does not show much until the cotton drifting arc. As for those who know the truth, and what is the Hinamizawa disaster really is (the answers are all in kai- but more or less shows the real culprit) and why the story "time loops". One thing about the curse killing arc (and i ppoint torwards the manga at most- is how he survived the "hinamizawa disaster... both the questions and truths dont tell why he was the only one alive... ... show more »

Oh god...my model perfect guy~ fun, smart, charismatic, full of strong beliefs, brave, hilarious, trustworthy...I just understand his character so much and I don't blame him for his actions in the first arc, nor do I feel like they weren't required, and I endlessly feel sorry for him because of that. Not to mention the way he changes in latter arcs is astounding.
