Rika Furude is one of the main character in Higurashi, and is one of the youngest in the series. She is best friends with Satoko Hojo, and they are not only in the same class, but they even share a home together. She is also friends with Keiichi Maebara, Rena Ryuuguu, Shion Sonozaki, and Mion Sonozaki. She cares a lot about her friends and is very cute (no wonder Rena Ryuuguu always wants to take her home).

Rika is very popular among the village as she is the heir to the village shrine, and is the priestess. She is the head of the Furude's as her parents died years ago. She is so young that she almost never attends the town meetings to discuss matters of the town's well being.

Her vocabulary is very strange as she likes to add words to her sentences such as "mi", "nipa" and "nano desu" ("that is so"). When talking about certain sounds, she likes to express them, "The cat was going 'nya nya' and 'scritch scritch'", and saying "Clap Clap Clap!" while applauding.

Only she can see Hanyuu at the beginning of the second season; Rika and Hanyuu share senses, as Hanyuu expresses great stress when Rika drinks wine or eats curry. When Hanyuu rises into the world, her and Rika's senses seem to no longer be linked at Matsuribayashi-hen.

When Rika was born, she was able to see Hanyuu and became good friends with her. When Rika was a bit older, she was murdered right after the Watagashi festival on June 31. When she died, Hanyuu was so hurt that she used her powers for Rika to be reborn every time she dies so they can play together as they used to. After Rika got frustrated of always being reborn and dying, every time she was reborn she went to different Hinamizawas (that explains why everybody kept reliving and didn't remember).

So Rika is one of the main reasons June 1983 continues to repeat, as she continues to attempt to change the previous events of the last June 1983 to allow her friends to survive. She estimates she has lived over 100 years, but continues to act as a child so not to scare her friends. Now, it's up to Rika to change fate.
