First of all, the Baron is different from the one in The Cat Returns, except that the voice of the cat is from the same person.
The Baron statue has a story to it that Mr. Nishi tells Shizuku Tsukishima. The Baron statue had a female statue that went with it. One day, the female statue needed to get repaired. Mr. Nishi sees the baron statue at a cafe in Paris, France with a lady named Louise. The owner agrees to sell, and Louise would give Mr. Nishi the other statue when it's repaired.
Mr. Nishi returns to Japan, but then WWII broke out, and he never saw Louise again. He does go back to Paris, but he never saw her. Shizuku Tsukishima uses the baron statue in her story called Whisper of the Heart.

Hey! What you people just said is amazing! I'll check it out next time I'll watch the movie again! BTW Katie, the female protagonist in 'Whisper of the Heart' is Shizuku and the female protagonist in 'Spirited Away' is Chihiro.

Also when Shihiro first sees the Baron his eyes movie (this is before she meets Mr. Nichi and before Seigi shows he the refractin light). Mr. Nichi acutally brought the Baron back from Germany I believe. It is the same character, they only look different because Miasaki's style has changed a lot in the time between Whisper of the Heart and The Cat Returns. Moota, AKA 'Moon' and 'Renaldo Moon', also plays a roll in both films. I'm not sure if this is foreshadowing on Miasaki's part as well, but if you pay attention in Whisper of the Heart whenever Shihiro is in her room there is a little witch that looks just like Kiki somewhere in her room (it always changes places). ... show more »

Even later the baron AGAIN switches how he holds his items, he holds his hat and cane in front of his body. His hat is in his right hand and the cane is hooked on his arm around the elbow, his other arm is behind his body.

In whisper of the heart they foreshadow that he might be real. The first time you see him he is holding his cane in front of his body with his hat behind, later it is the opposite, hat in front, cane behind.
