Yu-Gi-Oh! | Yu-Gi-Oh! Duel Monsters |
Seto Kaiba, owner and president of Kaiba Corporation, is no one's fool. Inheriting the business (and his cold attitude) from his late foster father, Kaiba has become one of the youngest corporate sensations in history. Mind you, the guy is still very young and yet he runs his own world-recognized tech corporation. Kaiba is himself a skilled computer user and a genius designer, making a number of technological leaps, mostly in the realm of entertainment. His Kaiba Land amusement park is noted for its innovative holographic Duel Monsters dueling arenas.
Why the emphasis on Duel Monsters? Because the only passion he has greater than technology or business is the Duel. He's the reigning World Champion and one of the most dreaded opponents one can ever face. He steps into any duel with perhaps the most serious and determined demeanor anyone can show. His Dueling Deck is a fearsome collection of powerful monsters, choice cards from his own vast collection. The crown jewels of his Deck are his three Blue-Eyes White Dragons: some of the most powerful monsters one can summon under normal circumstances. He has the only three remaining in existence (there was a fourth belonging to Solomon Moto [Sugoroku Mutou], but Kaiba tore it up personally).
But then, his business and passion for the Duel are put to the test. His first loss comes against Yugi (when Yugi managed to complete Exodia the Forbidden One that one time), and Yami Yugi's Mind Crush liberates the real Kaiba from the more wicked part of him that had been developing. The Big 5 of Kaiba Corp then begin an attempt to sell off the business to Maximillion Pegasus' Industrial Illusions. To help in that task, his only remaining family, his younger brother Mokuba, is kidnapped and taken to the Duelist Kingdom. So Kaiba sets off after Pegasus and Mokuba, armed with his latest invention: the Duel Discs. The Duel Discs are in essence a portable dueling system, allowing a duel anywhere, anytime (the Duel Discs are later released to the public to set the stage for Battle City).
In the process, Kaiba comes to Yugi's aid (if only to hurt Pegasus). But when Pegasus forces Kaiba's hand by sealing Mokuba's soul in a card, Kaiba is forced to duel his nemesis again. Despite his best techniques, he only manages to beat Yugi by putting his life on the line, a move Yugi was unable to accept. However, Pegasus would in turn unleash his own powers to beat Kaiba in a subsequent Duel and seal his soul in a card as well. Yugi duels and defeats Pegasus and wins the Kaiba brothers' freedom, although his original intention to fight was to save his grandpa, Solomon Moto.
Kaiba then turns his attention to his own corporation, who he now knows is trying to undermine him. He is trapped in a virtual reality game inspired by Duel Monsters, and once again, it's Yugi who helps him to escape. Despite these assists, Yugi and Kaiba consider each other to be heated rivals. There is still a long, hard road ahead for the cold, calculating duelist, especially when Ishizu invites him to an Egyptian exhibit and reveals to him the strings of destiny that are wound between him and Yugi stemming from 5,000 years in the past. Kaiba is to play a significant role in what is quickly becoming the grandest, most dangerous game of all.
After Yugi helps Kaiba escape the virtual world, they return to the tournament. Kaiba and the other finalists make their way to Alcatraz, the island which, to Kaiba, symbolizes all his hate and rage toward his father, Gozaburo. Before the finals can begin, all the finalists must duel for "rights" to duel people they wish, in a four way free for all duel. Kaiba ends up playing Yugi, with Yami Marik facing Joey.
After Joey has been defeated by Yami Marik, Yugi and Kaiba have their duel. Both manage to summon their Egyptian God Cards, but they are destroyed when both Slifer and Obelisk the Tormenter battle with their power equal. Both recuperate. With Kaiba's god gone, he relies on his good old Blue Eyes and manages to summon three of them. But, thanks to Yugi's clever playing and his Dark Paladin, Kaiba is defeated. Relinquishing Obelisk the Tormenter, he storms out, furious. Before Yugi and Yami Marik duel, Kaiba is convinced by Ishizu to give Yugi a card to help defeat Yami Marik, the Devil's Sanctuary:
Devil's Sanctuary
Special Summon 1 Devil Token to the Field (Fiend 0/0). This token cannot attack. Any damage done to his token is done to the opposing player instead. Pay 1000 of your own life points each of your standby phases or sacrifice the Devil Token.
Kaiba claims that according to his calculations, that single magic card will increase Yugi's chance of winning from 3% to 24%.
Kaiba is challenged by Joey to a duel, confident that without Obelisk the Tormenter, Kaiba will be manageable. Joey is actually getting the upper hand when Kaiba springs his Crush Card and destroys Joey's high level monsters. Joey struggles but can't manage it, and Kaiba once again defeats Joey.
After Yugi's victory over Yami Marik (Yugi saved the normal Marik), Kaiba leaves and heads toward the island's self destruct button with Mokuba. Mokuba activates the island's self destruct. Everyone but Seto and Mokuba escape on the helicopter that was to take Joey to the hospital. As they are mourning the Kaiba brothers' "death", they see Mokuba and Kaiba in a jet modeled after the Blue-Eyes White Dragon. Seto is laughing maniacally and says "I will see you geeks again, especially you, Yugi".
Later, when the world is threatened by a new evil (surprise, surprise), Kaiba, Yugi, and Joey once again have to save the world, this time from Dartz and his Orichalcos Soldiers. During this saga, the three Legendary Dragons are discovered (it's the Egyptian God Cards all over again). They are very special cards with ancient and extremely strong powers. They are Legendary Dragon Timaeus (Yugi's Dragon), Hellmos (Joey's), and Critias (Kaiba's). Uh oh. Legend says that they must be combined to save the world, and although Kaiba vowed that all of his hatred would disappear, he's still Kaiba, and that means he hates teamwork and is selfish, unreasonable, and well... cool. He refuses to cooperate with Yugi, and quote "That third rate hack of a duelist, Joey". Of course, you can't blame him for being bitter with Yugi. And his total disrespect of Joey has grown thanks to Joey's humiliating defeat in Battle City. But, as always, Kaiba, and his dragon, Critias come around in the end and Yugi defeats Dartz, ending this saga.
Remember that Theme Park Kaiba left to build in the U.S.? Well its done, and it's Battle City all over again, because Kaiba is hosting a tournament in the park's honor: the KC Grand Prix. Many old friends return to compete, such as Solomon Mutou and Rebecca Hawkins. Weevil and Rex Raptor even show up demanding the right to compete.
When the orphan Seto got adopted by Gozaburo Kaiba, he was strictly taught the ways of technology and company business day after day, and Gozaburo was cruel to him. All of this caused Kaiba to become cold-hearted and evil, his old self taken over by a demon created by his hatred (similar to Yami Marik).
"Yami" Kaiba only appears in the first episode of Yu-Gi-Oh!. When Yugi's grandpa refuses to sell him a Blue-Eyes White Dragon, Kaiba forces him into a duel. Using holographic technology, Kaiba severely injures Grandpa. Yugi then duels Kaiba to get revenge. Yugi wins and uses his Millenium powers to banish the evil from Kaiba completely. Thus, "Yami" Kaiba was destroyed.
In the dubbed anime, "Yami" Kaiba returns (at least Pegasus claims it's "Yami" Kaiba), looking fat and ugly with green hair. In the original Japanese version, this ugly person is one of Pegasus' Eliminators and not "Yami" Kaiba.
There is a little bit of controversy over the ages of the main characters in the English version of Yu-Gi-Oh!, so I will now attempt to explain the situation as best as I have been able to figure it out.
First, in the second season of the Japanese version (which is the first season of the English version), the characters are all starting high school. However, High School in Japan starts at grade 10, and not grade 9 like in the United States. It was at one time stated on the official Yu-Gi-Oh website that Yugi was a Freshman at Domino High School, which would make him and the others in his class about 14-15 years old, but I don't believe that this was ever specified in the show, and it is no longer stated on the website.
Now, specifically for Seto Kaiba. In the Japanese version, it is revealed that Seto was adopted at the age of 10 (episode 110: Noah's Secret), but in the English version, it is revealed that Seto was adopted at the age of 12 (episode 100: Isolated in Cyber Space: Yugi vs Big 1 - Part II). It is unknown how this affects his brother Mokuba's age (was Mokuba also two years older when adopted?). Also revealed in episode 110 is a picture of a younger Gozaburo with his real son, Noah, as an intelligence inside of a computer. Since a date on the picture supposedly puts it as being taken over six years ago, and since Seto had already been adopted at this time (as the picture was taken at the same time that Gozaburo took another picture of the adopted Seto), Seto must therefore be at least 18 years old.
This determination would seem to contradict that fact that Seto was in the same class as Yugi (as he definitely is in the Japanese version). However, when we see Seto in Yugi's class, it is only one time during the first episode. He is reading while Yugi and Joey are off to the side talking. So, this could have been some kind of study hall with students of mixed grades, or perhaps Yugi and Joey were taking an advanced level class that Kaiba was in, but whatever the reason for them being in the same room, the other evidence does tell us that Seto Kaiba is at least 18 years old in the English version.
And there is one more thing that needs to be mentioned. In the anime, Seto apparently makes the statement "If this picture was taken about six years ago, Noah should be the same age as me." Some people take this to indicate that Seto and Noah are the same age, when in reality Seto just means that Noah should have aged six years, like he did, and not that Noah should be exactly the same age as him. Think about it... Seto just met Noah and was just shown that picture, so he has no way of knowing exactly how old Noah was at the time of the picture.
