5 Reasons Why a Game of Thrones Anime Would Be Great Posted Oct 29, 2022
Game of Thrones fans and anime lovers have expressed their interest in making the well-known series an anime. And there’s no wonder the fandoms would want this because the GOT universe is so well-written that it would look different in any form of entertainment. At the same time, the anime industry has started to extend its execution to movies and series based on literature (Akage No Anne from Anne of Green Gables or Romeo X Juliet based on the story written by Shakespeare), so why wouldn’t GOT get the same opportunity of being introduced into the anime world?
Well, here’s why we think it would be a great idea!

The adaptation will be more accurate
Many fans have argued that the cast of GOT did not entirely fit into the universe since some characters looked completely different in the series, whereas the books would describe them in another way. Although fans who have not read the books are OK with this, it’s weird for GOT book lovers to see their favorite characters as they were in the books (for example, for Daario’s persona, Ed Skrein was not the best choice).
But creating an anime GOT would be easier to make since the drawings can be better adapted to the original design of all the characters. In anime, there’s no limit to how a personification can be done, so we would be able to see Maelys the Monstrous and Euron in their true form. Also, for instance, Targaryen family relations tend to be pretty messy, and anime could help bring them closer to the audience.
The animation could illustrate the story better
We know that in GOT, a lot of CGI is used to showcase the dragon scenes and the beautiful scenery of the many countries it was filmed in. The cast had to move from Northern Ireland to Scotland, Malta, and Spain, and as much as we liked seeing them, many scenes were still edited to give off the perfect vibe. Still, anime is an excellent method of animating those complicated film scenes, especially when we have so many promising studios.
For example, Wit Studios has become arguably the best anime studio from the past year since it completed so many incredible and complex projects (Attack on Titan, for example, has been increasingly harder to put into scene due to the scenario and drawings). Other great studios that could pull off a GOT anime are Ufotable, which made Demon Slayer, and Wit studio, which made the first seasons of AOT and Vinland Saga.
However, in terms of action scenes, given that Game of Thrones has complex battles. For example, the one where the lords of the continent of Westeros were fighting for the Iron Throne or the rise of Daenerys Targaryen. The Madhouse studio is the most competent to handle those scenes. After all, Madhouse is the one that gave us the best fight scene that we’ll ever see ―Saitama vs. Boros.
Arcs could help watchers enjoy the anime at a slower pace
GOT episodes are known to be long, and many things happen in one hour, so it was difficult to keep up with everything. With so many seasons, many fans had stopped watching the series (especially the last season, when everything went to waste). Still, anime arcs would perfectly encompass the necessary information and have the less important information in separate episodes.
The entertainment industry has to include anime as a perfect way of creating and describing known pieces of literature because even if it’s traditional Japanese animation, it will appeal more to young people. Plus, watching shorter episodes will help people grasp the information better. There would be no problem watching thousands of episodes since fan communities of One Piece have watched 1.035 episodes (and the last season was aired in 2019).
George R. R. Martin liked the idea
In an interview from two years ago, George R. R. Martin stated that an animated Got almost happened. Still, the executive who was supposed to meet him failed to turn up, which made the writer not accept another offer. The problem is that many other animation studios approached Martin, but he refused them because most of them wanted to cut off crucial moments from the book. So, at this point, we don’t expect another studio to reach out to R. R. Martin about a potential anime adaptation, but the hope is still there.
Let’s not forget that the author already had some concerns regarding the production of GOT since Bloodmon wasn’t going to appear in the series. Still, he stated in one interview that he felt more control over the new House of the Dragon series, so maybe he’ll be open to new collaborations.
A GOT anime could merge cultures
A true anime is nothing without Japanese subtitles, which can be a significant change in how fans could perceive the series. Still, many animes have been dubbed, and their essence wasn’t lost because making an anime doesn’t mean you have to eliminate its features but adapt them.
The GOT universe and its Valyrian language have changed the way we choose series now because GOT was written by a fantastic writer who made everything unique, from the characters to the language and scenery. What could happen if this world turned into an anime is something fans would be excited to see since there are so many anime lovers who love GOT. Therefore, a worldwide merge of cultures would be shocking (at first) but still fascinating.
Wrapping up
What do you think about a GOT anime? Although it sounds like a great idea, there would be a lot of work behind it to please all fans, but we believe it’s worth the try!
