The Liar Games

The popularity of this one is such that it’s been translated to both Chinese and Dutch. It’s an honest and shocking story about a schoolgirl called Nao Kanzaki who receives a package. The box contains 100 million yen (about $1,000,000), along with a note inviting her to a tournament called The Liar Games. Everyone taking part in the games has to lie and cheat, and anyone who tells the truth is forced to pay a debt that equates to their losses.

Akagi was originally published in 1991 and became a hit with anime fans soon after publication. The hero of the story is Shigeru Akagi who wins a game called Mahjong by defeating a Yakuza member.

Mahjong is a game with its Chinese roots based around tiles. After taking care of the Yakuza member, Aka vanishes, at which point he receives legendary status. Suddenly, one day, he comes back into the fray to play one last game against nemesis IwaoWashizu, the unofficial leader of the Japanese underworld.

Gamble Fish

While some of the more popular manga are part of a series, you’re almost guaranteed to come across Tankobon as well. The term is slang for an individual volume of single anime. In these simple terms, it’s essentially a book that stands on its own.

Gamble Fish tells the story of a 14-year-old boy by the name of Tomu Shirasagi whose father is a trickster named Yumeichirou. Toma is a student in a top academy called Shishidou.

It’s in that very academy where he finds his unusual skill and talent. It seems that God gifted him with the ability to be a con artist. He exploits his abilities to reveal the academy’s darker side.

This anime’s plot is completely original. It introduces Hyakkaou Private Academy. The academy educates children that come from affluent and wealthy Japanese families.

These children are all set to become their country’s leaders but find themselves involved in a dangerous game. There's a gambling system that exists in the academy where students gamble with one another. They risk their funds and fortune, with the prospect of a terrifying and horrifying result.

Students able to pay towards their debts are called “house sets”. Those unable to pay their debts are given Life Schedules that have an influence on their careers and future in general. When a student by the name of YumekoJabami enrols, the lives of these students are never the same again.

This anime series also goes by another name: Tobaku Mokushiroku Kajji. The original version was established in 1996, with the story revolving around a character called Kaiji who was always looking to pay off his debts.

He gambled and always seemed to lose when playing with his neighbours.

Once he became addicted to gambling, he found that he had secret gambling abilities that helped him achieve his goals of winning and paying off his debts.
