Character Description: Claire Stanfield
Claire Stanfield was taken in by the Gandor crime family after he was orphaned, and because of the relationship by the three brothers in the family, Keith, Berga and Luck, he was considered an unofficial FOURTH brother. He is also acquainted with Firo Prochainezo, who was also raised by the Gandors.
However, Claire had left home years afterwards to become a circus acrobat. But this turned-out to be a method of training for his first love – killing people. Claire became the hit man 'Vino', so named because the gruesome state of his victims' bodies resembles like they were soaked in red wine. Also, because he was a train conductor as well, his whereabouts were often hard to trace, as he would appear in one city on the east coast when his victims would be found in another on the west coast.
However, unlike Ladd Russo, Claire isn't a psychotic killer. He does possess a strong sense of justice, as was apparent when both the Russo family and the Lemures gang went on a rampage onboard the transcontinental train 'Flying Pussyfoot'. Before the train departed Union Station in Chicago in the year 1931, Claire's mentor in the business of train conducting, Tony, was brutally murdered by Dune, one of Ladd's henchmen, and had his uniform stolen. It took a horrendous interrogation near the speeding tracks before Claire found the truth and killed Dune, severing his right arm and grinding his face against the track's ties.
Covered in blood, Claire then went on a rampage against both groups – but was ultimately fascinated by one of the Lemures soldiers – Chane Laflore, the daughter of immortal Huey Laflore, not only for her beauty, but her deadly skill as she betrayed the Lemures to protect the secret of her father's immortality from them. As the battle wound down, Claire asked the mute Chane about his proposition to marry her, and to carve her answer on the top of the train cars before abandoning the train.
Upon arriving in New York (after the train had to exchange the damaged cars and engine), Claire had reunited with the Gandors outside Grand Central Terminal... and announced to them that he was abandoning the name 'Claire Stanfield'. He then proceeded to find Chane, but because of his awkwardness about talking to women, he sought-out Rachel, whom he met onboard the Flying Pussyfoot. He then purchased her a new dress – with accessories to conceal her knives, but had to rescue her from an enthusiast of Ladd Russo – Graham Specter, who kidnapped Chane mistaking her for Eve Genoard.
In the Baccano! Light novels, Claire changed his name to Felix Walken.
