Frequently Asked Questions

Q: What does FLCL mean?
A: First off, FLCL stands for "Fooly Cooly" - but in Japanese it's called "Furi Kuri" because there is no L or C sounds. "Furi Kuri" has been translated in many different ways, the most common interpreted meaning is "fondling a woman's breasts". Throughout the series the term "Fooly Cooly" is used as an expression for having sex. The mysterious title of the series could also be interpreted as a metaphor for the confusing and unknown territory of sex from adolescence point of view. “Fooly Cooly” could also be referring to how Naota attempts to act cool and mature, only making things more awkward.

Q: I heard that GAINAX was making a FLCL movie?
A: Unfortunantly this was only a rumor. On the official GAINAX website they said previews for the FLCL movie were coming soon. This was a translation error and they were only referring to short previews of FLCL episodes that you could download from their site.

Q: FLCL seems completely random at times. Is there deeper meaning to the series?
A: Very much so. Almost everything in FLCL some how alludes to sex, puberty, or the liking. The whole series is Naota's ascend into manhood. Sometimes the symbolism is so subtle you would never guess - other times it seems so bluntly obvious ("Swing the bat Takkun!").

Q: What does Atomsk actually look like?

A: Atomsk is originally shown as a humanoid with long hair, but later as a giant bird. Atomsk's correct image is the bird (it's disputed wether or not he can change forms however). Never actually having seen Atomsk, Amarao was only describing what he thought Atomsk looked like to Naota. This is an allusion to the anime Trigun.

Q: Why is there only 6 episodes?
A: FLCL was a test of Gainax's new animation equipment and technology. The series is a completed work, created to be a 6 episode run. It was the project Gainax started and the Director finished in 6 episodes. If you were hoping they would release some kind of sequal, don't hold your breath. If you want more to the series try the 2-part FLCL manga.

Q: Is FLCL for kids?
A: No, FLCL is directed at older teens to adults. The series however has nothing explicitly inappropriate; or at least nothing that kids will pick up on. Because of the hyper-active style of FLCL, kids tend to be attracted to the show. At face value, FLCL may seem like just another Japanese cartoon even though it's filled with mature themes and adult references. FLCL is a coming-of-age story about a boy going through puberty, so obviously older audiences will have a greater appreciation for it. There is a reason it airs on Cartoon Network's Adult Swim block.
