Actually Ed was originally a boy, but the creator decided on a gender change so there wasn't 3 guys and 1 hot girl on the bebop......it was to even things out a bit

That may be true, but still not why her name is ed. In the orphanage with the nun she was able to choose her own name and being the messed up little child she is chose Ed as her name. (Am i right on that backround?)
