Parents and Manga

Post by duck »

How can I get my parents to understand that all manga is not 'bad' (as they put it)? I've tried showing them fluffy cutsey things, and totaly harmless manga (like stuff my seven year old cousin could read and understand) but they still think it's a waste of my money and it is moraly corrupt.

Then say 'Parentals, up yours.' and keep buying it. You aren't getting caught being underage with 18+ yaoi manga are you?

Honestly, I wouldn't blame them...I think manga takes some of the graphic images to far. Next time you're at the bookstore, ask them to at least skim through it and see if they'll approve of it. Show them something like G-Gundam or something like that. OR! You can find a bookseller who knows about manga. They might be able to help you.

My Family has never been difficult with my unhealthy obsession - but you should really sit down and talk to them about it. I mean, what if you want to be a manga artist/writer when you're older? They'd be hindering your dream - and that's NOT GOOD PARENTING.

lol. but seriously, some of the images ARE a little... erm, naughty - but luckily my parents think it's hilarious and actually let me buy more. Mom actually bought me a book on how to DRAW the stuff.
(which really helped me with my manga anatomy ;D)

...so yeah. You might need to talk to them - or just go out and buy it anyway. Save up your money and just buy it I say! xD

My parents don't exactly like me reading it but don't deny me the joy. Actually, it's like Yami said, they think its funny. Like, I had to buy Love Hina Vols 1 and 2 by telling my mom what to get and she thought the covers were funny.
But most of the stuff I love, shonen, they do find odd. Like, why are you reading all these boys comics and things like that.

My parents don't have any problems with me reading mangas.
My mom actually tried to read Fushigi Yuugi a few years ago, but she gave up on the 2nd volume XD She said it was too complex for her to read the manga in the right direction.. XDD

I bought a 18 year old + manga (Death Note- it's recommended for more than 18 year old people XD) and my dad saw it. He just asked me why it was for people with more than 18 years old and I said I didn't know, I had already watched the anime...

But most of times, I buy shonen manga (FMA)... so it's ok XD

Umm... Death Note is not 18+. Not by any stretch of the imagination

The rating that VIZ gave it was 16+, not 18+ (Also it is sold here under the Shonen Jump Advanced label. If it was 18+ it'd be released under VIZ signature label, even if it was in Shonen Jump in Japan, as is the case with Bastard!!)
In the beginning was the Win, and the Win was with Gai, and the Win was Gai.

Well, Rin lives in Brazil so the rating scale may be different. America doesn't exactly rate things right anyways XD

But I agree that Death Note shouldn't be 18+

And yea, shonen is WAY better

I think it's rated 18+ here too for nudity. Maybe? No wait, it's 16+ here. Yea, in America a program can be rated G (general audiences, usually means 7 and up) and still have profanity. The simple ones like 'damn' and 'hell'. Um...oh yea, if it's rated PG 13 (parental guidance for under 13) there can be nudity.

Death Note is considered 18+ here....
I don't know why, but it is.
Maybe it has something to do with the main character being a mass murderer... but yeah, that still doesn't make it 18+ material. When I think of 18+ manga I usually think of either Gantz or Homunculus.

and seinen's better than shounen (imo)...unless JJBA's shounen.
