Need help on learning Japanese!

It's not nearly as complex as English, but as usual we find ways to screw it up.

Need help on learning Japanese!

Post by Roy Hughes »

I have always wanted to learn Japanese. I only know some words, but I don't know if I spelled them right. Here's what I know so far.

Hello - Konnichiha
Goodbye - Sayounara
Yes - Hai
No - Iie
Thank you - Arigatou
Peace - Heiwa
Please - Kudasai
1 - Ichi
2 - ni
3 - san
4 - yon (or shi)
5 - go
6 - roku
7 - nana
8 - hachi
9 - ku
10 - juu

If you guys know of any other Japanese words as well, (or even some phrases or terms) then please do so! Arigato!

well. I know too many. but I can correct some words of yours lol.

First thing. on Konnichiha: the way you spell it with hiragana, your letters are right, but the 'ha' at the end is pronounced 'wa'. I'm sure u already knew this, but it may cause confusion to some. This is why romaji is gei.

Sayonara means goodbye, but u should just use jyaane (it has a more casual effect.)

Kudasai doesn't really mean.. 'please'. it's kinda like a formal addon (like if you're telling someone something in a polite manner.) for please, use Onegai.

4 - Yon (or shi) <-- shi is actually the basic four. so it should be 'shi (or yon). btw, yon is used after any number above 10. example: Yonjuushi = 44

7 - nana <-- above 10, it's shichi (I think). example: shichijuunana = 77 (I think)

9 (ku) can also be spelled kyuu. I think it's the above 10 thing again, unsure.

7's the only part I'm not sure about <_<... well that's it.

here's some words I should just add.

Kura(i) - Dark
Kuma - Bear

<_<;

I would think it would look weird if it was nanajuunana :lol:

Good job.

Additional Words:

Ohayoo (gozaimasu) = good morning
Konban wa = good evening
Blue like. Like blue.

It should also be noted that "watashi no atama no ue ni iru usagi ha bakabakashiku naru" or 私の頭の上にいるウサギは馬鹿馬鹿しくなる means "The rabbit on my head in going mad"

This is a very useful phrase to know, you never know when it might come in handy

Maybe I'm the one going mad :-s

People Referrences:

I/me = watashi/watakushi
We = watashitachi
You = anata
Name = namae
You (guys) = anata/[someone's name]tachi
I/me (males) = boku
I/me (females) = atashi
(let me know if you want to know family stuffs)

Seasons:
Spring = haru
Summer = natsu
Fall = aki
Winter = fuyu

Days:

Sunday = nichiyoubi
Monday = getsuyoubi
Tuesday = kayoubi
Wednesday = tsuiyoubi
Thursday = mokuyoubi
Friday = kinyoubi
Saturday = doyoubi

Honorific (used after last or first names).:
Mr./Ms. = -san

Colors:
Aka(i) = red
Orenji = orange
Kiiro(i) = yellow
Midori = green
Ao(i) = blue
Murasaki = purple
Chairo(i) = brown
Kuro(i) = black
Gin = silver
Kin = gold
Shiro(i) = white

Misc.:
It's all right = daijoubu
Are you alright? = daijoubu desu ka?
I'm home = tadaima
Welcome home/you must've had a long day (answer for "tadaima") = okaerinasai
Let's eat(said before eating anyway) = itadakimasu
Delicious! = oishii!
Hurry up = hayaku
Watch out! = abunai!
Good luck = gabatte
Please excuse me = shitsurei shimasu
Hello (used for phones only) = moshi moshi
Good night = oyasuminasai

Key: ( ) = when placed with this, it becomes an adjective. When there isn't this, than it remains a noun. You won't see these paranthesis around but it's just an example.

That's about all I could think of at the moment. There's a side note:

"Thank you" can be said in several ways. The longest ones are the most humble.
1) Doomo
2) Doomo arigatou
3) Doomo arigatou gozaimasu
4) Arigatou
5) Arigatou gozaimasu

"Doomo" has no real literal translation aside from appreciation.

...I had something else in mind, but I totally forgot about it at the moment. I'll get back to you if I remember.

Hey, I got a challenge for ANY one here. Can you translate the following skit I made up from my fave Japanese Anime - Naruto? Oh, and if you must - use Japanese slang like they do in Japanese dub versions of Naruto, One Piece and Sonic X (for example). "You know what I'm saying?" could be "dattebayo" in Japanese slang!

Naruto: He's late...again! Why does he always have to be late, you know what I'm saying?
Sakura: Be patient, Naruto! Kakashi-Sensei will get here soon, alright!
Sasuke: Hmm...idiot!
Naruto: Hey, I wonder what Kakashi-Sensei has under his mask?
Sakura: STUPID NARUTO!!!!!
Sasuke: You loser! We've been through this before! It's just another mask!
Sasuke and Sakura: Idiot!
Naruto: Sorry...
Kakashi: Hi.
Naruto: Hey, you're late!
Iruka: So what if he is?! So was I!
Naruto: Oh, uh...sorry Iruka-Sensei. Heh...

Lol. 'dattebayo' is so uber massive slang it's almost unreal. da = particle that marks declaritives. 'datte' is what u say when ur more annoyed. 'datteba' is when you're just like 'zomfg stfu already'. and then dattebayo, I don't even think it's even used in japanese. It's kinda farfetched.

Lol and btw. I'm not even gonna try to translate that.

Naruto uses it a whole lot in the anime, another reason why the dubbers had a hard time trying to accomodate for that when they did the voicings and came up with "Believe it!" for Naruto instead. He's just...weird like that.

To Iruka-san: I only can do a partial translation with all the rudeness that I've picked up on for speaking in Japanese, but I can't really do it right now. I may come back here later with my partial-nessess.

Oh, it's okay. I didn't expect the WHOLE thing to be translated. And don't worry, DarkBearX, I understand.

Hmm...how about this? What if I used "www.babelfish.altavista.com" to translate the skit into Japanese (symbols, DUH!)? That MIGHT make it easier, but I doubt it. Here it is!

Naruto: 彼は遅れる... 再度! 彼はなぜ常に私が言っていることを知っている遅れなければならないか。
佐倉: 忍耐強いが、Naruto ありなさい! Kakashi-Sensei は、申し分なくやがてここに着く!
Sasuke: Hmm の... 馬鹿!
Naruto: ちょっと、私はKakashi-Sensei に彼のマスクの下であるものが疑問に思うか。
佐倉: 愚かなNARUTO の!!!!!
Sasuke: 敗者! 私達はこれによって前にあった! それは別のマスク公正である!
Sasuke 及び佐倉: 馬鹿!
Naruto: 残念...
Kakashi: こんにちは。
Naruto: ちょっと、遅れる!
Iruka: そうでか。あればそう何! そうI はあった!
Naruto: ああのuh... 残念なIruka-Sensei 。Heh...

As much as the attempt to research out on your own should be praised, I'd have to disagree with the use of babelfish. It can be accurate, and then there's the not.

Japanese don't really say the whole sentence neither. They cut corners (you know who ya are, whom that has said it, heh) to make things shorter:

Naruto: osooooi...! Naze itsumo ga osoi dattebayo!?
Sakura: nintai, Naruto! Sugi ni Kakashi-sensei ga kimasu yo!
Sasuke: ...bakayarou.
Naruto: ne, ne! Kakashi-sensei no kamen no shita de ka to omou zo...!
Sakura: Naruto, BAKA!!
Sasuke: butsu butsu iu-na! Kono koto wa mou owatta no de hanakatta te, mou hitori no kamen!
Sakura and Sasuke: baka!
Naruto: gomen, kikun ja nakatta...
Kakashi: yo.
Naruto: OI!! OSOI DATTEBAYO!!
Iruka: dakara nan da? Watashi mo te!
Naruto: e-eh, sumani, Iruka-sensei...! H-heh...

Well...I gave it a shot...a horrible one, might I add. I also tried to use the rude formats that fit each character as much as possible from what I can remember. Sakura usually uses a more politer speech with Sasuke being of a more insult-type and Naruto being the wild one.

I was iffy on the "sumani" word. There's another translation that's similiar to the "sumani" that equals to "sorry", but I can't remember. Maybe someone'll correct me on it.
