I've seen it in a few comics and always wondered what it meant. It looks just like a 5.

The first thing that comes to mind is the hiragana RA: ら

...But if you don't have Japanese encoding, it'll just look like a question mark or a box to you right now.

Umm... the hiragana CHI, JI, and U (ち・ぢ・う) also kind of look like the number 5.

But all of these would probably be part of a word... it wasn't just sitting by itself on the page, was it?
