Japanese Names

It's not nearly as complex as English, but as usual we find ways to screw it up.

Japanese Names

Post by AmayaChan »

Hi!
I know that some Japanese names have a meaning, like Sakura (I couldn't remember a better name :heh: ).
Well, if it's true, does Kurogane, Nozomi and Yuuko means something? And what about my "name" Amaya?
I'm curious!

The names you're inquiring about can sometimes have several meanings, but this might be different:

Kurogane = iron(鉄/黒金)
Nozomi = wish;hope(望み), nozomi(臨み)
Yuuko = yuuko(悠子) it's just a name from what I could look up so far.
Amaya = amaya(海士や) same thing with "Yuuko", sorry.

There probably is a meaning somewhere though. I just don't have the proper knowledge or other resources at the moment.

When I saw Yuuko I instantly thought of 夕子 wich means "Evening child"

My friend is getting married to a girl called "yuu" 夕 so I instantly thought of that

Even though it is probably way off the mark

I didn't really take the names apart kanji by kanji. I translated them as a whole. But I believe you're right. It sounds nicer than that way too than just a name :lol:

AmayaChan: you're welcome.

Orion-san:

Himeko = 姫子 = Himeko, or princess child if you take it apart
Himeno = 姫の/姫野 = Himeno/Himeno, or princess field
Awayuki = 淡雪 = light snowfall

You're not letting me off the hook, are ya?

Sosuke/Sousuke = 曽助/宗助 = Sosuke/Sousuke, or sectional rescue
Chidori = 千鳥 = plover or literally 1,000 birds
Ginji = 銀二 = Ginji, or silver twos
Amino = 網野 = Amino, or network field
Ban = 晩 = evening
Mido = 未度 = Mido in different parts. This one was a bit hard for me to find (too much kanjis). Literally means "unoccurences" or "not yet counter for occurences". Confusing? Maybe I'll come back to this one later when I get some food in me. I haven't ate yet.

For names, there's a handy feature at this online dictionary:

dict.regex.info/cgi-bin/j-e/dict

Just uncheck "words" and check "names" instead. (Then make sure it's on "word matching pattern".)

Needless to say, it'll usually come up with a ton of answers for you, and there's a little guide as to what the letters mean next to them (surname, given name, so on). But it also means there are many different meanings for each name, like Ryu said.

Sifting through them might take time, but it also lets you pick which meaning is the coolest to you. Of course, if we're talking names already established by anime or something, it'd be better to hunt down the kanji on a Google Japanese search instead.

There are over 100 matches for "Asuka", so there are too many kanji combinations for me to translate. I don't watch Weiß Kreuz, so I tried looking through the characters on the main Japanese site, but I didn't find Asuka from there.

There's another reading of Amaya as a first name ( 阿麻弥 ) but it's nowhere near as pretty as the other one.

阿: flatter; corner
麻: flax
弥: increasingly

Asuka isn't veeeery important..... I think Sakura is more important... well, my friend told me that Asuka was something like ''flower of the morning'' (i don't know if is that right... if it isn't, my friend told me wrong.... XP And don't mind my grammar mistakes!!! XD)

Amaya = night rain
Kurogane = black steel
Nozomi = Hope
Yuko = help/assist

Hope this helps you

my name Yumiko means "arrow child", which makes no sense because I suck at archery.
