In trigun, Knives shot Vash's arm off and grafted it onto legato's left arm, apparently symbolic in Japan.

i dont no who legato is. but i do no of vash and knives(weird name)

Later in the series, Legato works for Knives. I won't say more because it would be an uber spoiler.

Knives (in the manga) can turn his arms into knives and catch bullets or kill people.

PS-Legato is the coolest. I'm going to cosplay him at Otakon one of these years....
