The cat's name is "Kuroneko-sama!" The "-sama" is very important here, people! Without it, he's just another black cat. ("-sama" means "Lord" in Japanese, FYI)

I think I said it before. It's Nightow's running joke, a personal quirk injected into the anime. Still, it's tastefully done. Whether actively doing something or just on the side, the cat's always in a pretty funny or at the least innocuous spot.

Kuroneko is awesome! he's actually the reason I started watching Trigun in the first place...I turned on the TV and saw some dude in a red coat then a cat and was like "yay a cat let's watch" since then Trigun has grown to become my fav anime and manga ~ last year at summer camp myself and some friends woke everyone in the camp up with a ten minute "Love and Peace" tirade

And it's name is Kuroneko, which simply means "the black cat" (kuro = black, neko = cat).
