Hey, I was just researching alchemy yesterday (wikipedia), along with other things related to the 1988 novel _Foucault's Pendulum_ by Umberto Eco. (I'm in the middle of it.) I've also been watching Fullmetal Alchemist eps, obviously so it was very interesting to find that Paracelsus, mentioned above, was also named Hohenheim (sound familiar?) and he believed in alchemy as a science and not a religious pastime. The guy that some believe found the elixir of life and his grave is empty is Nicholas Flamel, who believed in alchemy as a form of magic. Some may remember him being mentioned in _Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone_. Popular guy! Flamel's grave has a serpent cross symbol (along with other emblems), which is the symbol you see on Edward's shoulder (and somewhere on Alphonse too, but I can't remember where at the moment). Interesting, huh?

wow very interesting NoMatter I see you've done your research well. maybe I too should start researching Alchemy.

It's interesting that a lot of the people we consider as building the foundations of modern scientific thought are people who dabbled a lot in alchemy. Isaac Newton, for one, spent way more time on alchemic research than anything else he did. It's interesting to think of how scientific and religious thought (since alchemy was a spiritual thing for some, as it was born of the church) have changed over time.
