I read somewhere that it was Zach's spirit watching over Cloud still. Karin, do u remember any appearances during scenes of a wolf/dog? There are quite a few scenes in which it does appear: at Zach's grave in the beginning, after Cloud finds Tifa after she fights with 'what's his name- Loz, and then in the forest, and Zach actually appears in the end when Cloud died but Aerith and Zach said it wasn't his time yet.

Wow....................... I thought that it was just there, like an easter egg to the movie, if you spot it you spot it but if you don't you don't.

Pretty much that's how it goes.
