Vash is an exception to the rule. He's not one of the colonists. He was found and named outside their scope. The only name he was given (AFAIK) was Vash. The title "the Stampede" came as a result of his reputation. Other than that, he has no other name.
Ericks was a name given to him after the Fifth Moon incident. At the time he was found, Vash was still reeling with amnesia (an after-effect of being forced to shoot the Angel Arm), but even after he recovers, he decided to hold onto this identity for a while...until Wolfwood arrives with news that sends him back on the road.
But if you were to ask him up front, he'll tell you the same thing he told Wolfwood when he asked for Vash's real name: "My name's irrelevant."
But Knives was found outside of the colony too and he has a last name.

i know in the English dubbed version, they never say it. period. I'll go back and watch the series in japanese to see if they do, but something tells me that they don't ever say it.

Actually, that's just a name to throw Wolfwood off.
He says 'Feel free to cough' as he's making up this name.
The only name he's ever called is 'Vash' or 'Brother'

hmmm you know what i think vash last name is saverem or knives i dunno but who cares LOL i mean it's vash the stampede the humanoid typhoon...the devil's helper its only like that...plus it adds more mysterie to the trigun movie in which they are working may-b in the movie they will reaveal somehting

Let me enlighten you. IF Vash were to have a real last name, it would be Saverem, but Rem was not actually a mother or adoptive mother, she acted more like an older sister would. Vash and Knives were both "plants"... they were not natural organisms like the rest of the humans. They had no last name, as they were not part of any family. Now, "Millions Knives" is different. This is likely a name he made up for himself. Vash and Knives were called Vash and Knives from the beginning, and those were not nicknames.

Wow...!!!!They are making a movie... OMG... I so have to see it.. I am a major Trigun fan.. Do you know when it comes out cause i would really like to know.

Vash the Stampede is like an alias. Therefore, Millions Knives would be the alias for Knives.
I agree Saverum (sp?) would be an appropriate last name, but honestly humanoid plants probably don't have last names because technically they are experiments
